No Experience to Cloud Engineer | Step by Step Roadmap
Just a few years ago, I found myself in a predicament – working in tech but feeling unfulfilled.
That's when I discovered the incredible potential of the cloud industry and decided to make a bold move: becoming a Cloud Engineer in just three months, armed with only online resources.
Against all odds, I succeeded, landing multiple job offers and starting on a journey that would lead me to work with Fortune 500 companies, startups, and government organizations.
Here's the truth: with the right mindset, a structured plan, and unwavering determination, anyone can achieve their dream of becoming a Cloud Engineer.
In this newsletter, I'll break down the essential steps that paved my way to success, so you too can join the ranks of cloud professionals and unlock a world of opportunities.
Step 1: Mastering Cloud Fundamentals
Before diving into the technical aspects, it's crucial to understand the basics of cloud computing from both a technological and business perspective.
What is the cloud, and why is it so transformative for businesses? What are the core components of the cloud, such as networking, operating systems, virtualization, databases, and security?
Understanding these fundamentals will provide you with a solid foundation upon which to build your cloud engineering skills.
Step 2: Understanding Cloud Architecture
As a Cloud Engineer, you'll be responsible for designing and implementing robust, scalable, and resilient cloud solutions.
To achieve this, you must master key architectural concepts like high availability, scalability, fault tolerance, and disaster recovery.
By understanding how to build cloud architectures that can withstand failures, handle increasing demands, and recover quickly from major incidents, you'll become an invaluable asset to any organization.
Step 3: Choosing Your Cloud Platform
While there are several cloud platforms to choose from, the three giants in the industry are Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure.
Research to determine which platform offers the most job opportunities in your region, and then commit to becoming an expert in that platform. AWS, being the largest and most established player, is often the go-to choice for many aspiring Cloud Engineers.
Step 4: Earning Cloud Certifications
Cloud certifications are not mandatory, but they can give you an advantage in the job market, especially when starting with no experience.
For AWS, consider pursuing the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner and AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate certifications.
These credentials will validate your theoretical knowledge and demonstrate your commitment to potential employers.
Step 5: Hands-On Practice and Project Building
Theory alone is not enough. Hands-on practice and project building are key to becoming a proficient Cloud Engineer.
Start by developing a coding foundation, as programming skills are essential in cloud engineering.
Then, dive into cloud tools like Terraform and GitHub Actions, and begin building projects immediately.
The more you build, the more challenges you'll encounter and solve, solidifying your practical experience.
Remember, the path to becoming a Cloud Engineer is not easy, but the rewards are well worth the effort.
But why does this all matter to you?
Why does this matter to you?
Well, let me break it down…

High Demand: There's a huge shortage of Cloud Engineers, making it one of the hottest jobs in tech right now. That means lots of job openings and great pay.
Endless Opportunities: From startups to big corporations, everyone needs cloud engineers to help them move to the cloud and optimize their systems.
In 2025, Cloud Skills and the ability to use cloud-based tools will be the most in-demand in the UK.
